- Mark:

- I hate to break it to you but you (and I) were taken for a walk in the
- park. I just finished a heated e-mail session with Zoltrix in
- Oakland, CA, who confirmed for me that A) Zoltrix America does not
- support UMC UPI modems and B) they are not going to in the future.
- These modems were only sold in Canada. In the U.S. they sell UMC
- modems that have hardware compression/error correction. Only in
- Canada did they pull a "Rockwell" and offer software compatibility
- only.
-
- You see, UMC is a Hong Kong company that has come up with an RPI clone
- that they call UPI. It will not work with WinrRPI, however, (some
- clone). For one thing, WinRPI looks for "Rockwell RPI" in the
- firmware header. Maybe there was a promise of such soft(vapour)ware
- when UMC embarked on the clone-chip scheme but it has not and
- apparently will not materialize to take advantage of v.42bis and MNP5
- -- yes, as promised on the box.
-
- You can phone 3D Microcomputers in Toronto, Zoltrix's Canadian rep,
- and you will be told very politely that they are not aware of any of
- this but that you should feel free to contact the place where you
- bought the dreaded thing and try to return it. When you try to do
- that, the store will politely tell you that false-advertising is not
- their problem and that Zoltrix will have to re-imburse you, thus
- completing the sorry circle.
-
- So now you know. I suggest that we not worry too much about RPI and
- it's clone. Even RPI doesn't seem to do what it advertises for the
- most part anyway. It's a fairly good modem for what we paid for it
- without mickey-mouseing around with RPI. Maybe I'm taking it too
- lightly, but life is too short to fight for, what, 10-15% increase in
- speed, maybe, at best, and only if you don't fax?
-
- If you *do* want to return it, I would suggest offering the store a
- deal, that you will upgrade to one of his 28.8k modems if he gives you
- a credit. The store is much more likely to take an interest in this
- silly (and, yes, extremely annoying) problem that way. Now is the
- chance to get that USR Sportster with 33.6 K that you've always
- wanted! Good luck.
